Abstract/Summary:
This dissertation reads constructions of white identity in California Literature from the 1870s through the 1940s and discusses the emergence and development of a white literary aesthetic during this period. The study explores how California literary aesthetics has been shaped by as well as informed the evolution and maintenance of an ideology of whiteness in California culture.
