Abstract/Summary:
This qualitative study explored elementary assistant principals' perspectives on their role and responsibilities. Online interview questions, focus group interviews and review of documents were the source of data for this study. The study produced seven emergent themes: School Operational Management, Daily Discipline Management, Teacher Support and Development, Multiplicity of Operational Duties, Assigned to Ancillary Duties, Intrinsic Motivation based on Stakeholder Feedback and Necessity of Leadership Preparation. Findings from the study were that elementary assistant principals perform a multiplicity of daily tasks and discipline demands a significant portion of their time. Elementary assistant principals desire more tasks that directly influence student achievement and preparation for leadership roles. Recommendations for further research include a comparative study that examines differences and similarities in the role of elementary assistant principals in various geographical locations, magnet and charter schools, a mixed methods study of elementary assistant principal discipline practices, and further research regarding the changing role of elementary assistant principals to impact student achievement.
