Promoting socio-economic development: How mobile telephony is an agent for creating high-paying jobs in Ghana from the service providers' perspective

This exploration study examined solely, mobile telephony (which is an important aspect of ICTs) and how it promotes the creation of high-paying jobs that positively impact socio-economic development in Ghana from the service providers' perspective. This academic study focusing solely on Ghana mobile telephony service providers is the first of its kind. The study employed the mixed methodology research design approach and collected data using researcher designed instrument. Questionnaire was administered to one hundred and fifty purposefully selected respondents from the registered five mobile telephony services providers in Ghana at the time of the study. The results of this study indicate that the diffusion of mobile telephony provide high-paying jobs that significantly impact employment growth in the country. Furthermore, the results show that the diffusion of mobile telephony has significantly increased employment in Ghana with some economic benefits to the country. The extent to which employees agree, however, that the diffusion of mobile telephony has significantly increased employment in Ghana depends to some degree on the length of service with the company and the employee's educational level. Finally, the results of this study suggest that females are not represented to the same extent as males in the mobile telephony sector in Ghana, irrespective of the employee's education level, skills and experiences. Through mobile telephony diffusion the country has directly and indirectly been impacted with some high-paying jobs not just in the cities but in rural areas of the country as well.
