Abstract/Summary:
The process of obtaining an education has been made more available for students with the introduction of online web-based degree programs. This method of delivering educational programs and materials has also introduced a variety of unique challenges for colleges, professors, and students alike. Administrators, faculty, staff, and students are realizing that in order to successfully implement online web-based learning, educational programs need to be reassessed. The main purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the self-efficacy maintained by twelve Department of Defense (DOD) employees, all enrolled in the same course, regarding their online web-based distance learning experience. Course effectiveness and student satisfaction are critical components when considering whether a student will actually be successful and finish the course. The notion of perceived course effectiveness includes a student's capabilities and their motivation to organize and execute courses of action that are required to complete the predetermined learning objectives. A student's perceived satisfaction regarding course effectiveness is also a proven predictor of academic achievement.; This study identified convenience and flexibility as the primary reason participants found satisfaction with their online course. This finding was closely followed by the student's ability to communicate with colleagues and instructor via e-mail and team folders, and finally they believe that they simply learn better with online web-based distance learning technologies.; They also identified factors that they believe hinder their ability to learn. Primary among this category was a lack of face-to-face contact. Participants said that online courses demand a much greater workload than traditional on-campus courses, and therefore inhibit their ability to view learning as a positive activity.; The benefits to online distance learning include flexibility, convenience, and provide educational opportunities to anyone, anywhere, and at anytime. There are also challenges associated with these benefits but the key to overcoming the challenges is to adequately prepare now for the digital transformation that will affect education and the way we learn and provide education.
