Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this multiple cases qualitative study was to determine the average length of service of public school superintendents in the Mississippi Delta region of the state and to identify factors that contribute to superintendents' tenure in this particular state. A case study of four superintendents representing a purposive sample of 2 females and 2 males appointed and elected in school districts throughout this region of Mississippi engaged in a face-to-face interview. Observations were made of school board meetings for each superintendent. The procedures sought answers to a central research question that inquired of the meaning of being a superintendent in the Mississippi Delta, and 3 secondary questions through data from interviews, observations, and reviews of documents. These data were analyzed through content analysis. The results revealed the average length of tenure is 3.5 years; factors contributing to superintendents' tenure were synonymous with the meaning of being a superintendent imbedded in the following thematic findings: (a) success in the responsibility of upholding policies and procedures while conducting the day-to-day operations of the district is contingent upon training, relationship building, and qualifications and experience of the superintendent; (b) accountability and attitudes of stakeholders present challenges; therefore, building relationships is important; and (c) the superintendent's tenure is influenced by salary, respect for the role/responsibility, school performance, and the nature of the relationship between the superintendent and the school board. Recommendations for the sites, the profession, and future research were made informed by the results and relevant literature.
