Abstract/Summary:
The purposes of this study were to examine: (a) demographic characteristics of individuals identified as intercollegiate athletics insurance coordinators (AIC); (b) the perceptions of AIC on selected job-related tasks; (c) basic characteristics of an intercollegiate athletics insurance program and the profile of AIC; (d) perceptions of AIC on job motivation based on the concept of Motivational-Hygiene Factors Theory (Herzberg, 1966; Herzberg, Mausner, Snyderman, & Bloch, 1959); and (e) rated extremely important job-related tasks and topics for AIC training workshops and seminars.; The target population for this study was all individuals (n = 228) identified as AIC of NCAA Division I member institutions during the 1995--1996 academic year. Of the 211 subjects that participated 105 (49.8%) returned questionnaires considered usable.; When comparing job titles of AIC, the results revealed that athletics trainer certified (ATC) served as AIC over 80% (n = 84) of the time at NCAA Division IA (public), and NCAA Division IA & IAA (private) institutions. Starting salaries for AIC at NCAA IA & IAA (private) institutions were {dollar}2,000 to {dollar}4,000 more than AIC at NCAA IA & IAA (public) institutions; and current salaries for AIC at NCAA IA & IAA (private) institutions were almost {dollar}7,000 more than AIC at NCAA IA & IAA (public) institutions.; The AIC gender for this study was 57.1% (n = 60) males and 42.9% (n = 45) females; with 92.4% (n = 88) of the AIC working full-time. Eighty-eight percent (n = 105) of the AIC were white Americans. Sixty-six percent (n = 90) of the AIC had master's degrees.; Using the Mann-Whitney test the investigator found a significant difference (p < .0042) for two groups of NCAA Division IA and IAA (public and private) AIC (n = 105) related to mailing insurance information to parents. Finally, when AIC (n = 90) ranked the Herzberg's motivation and hygiene factors assessment, the investigator found no relationship at p = .0025.
