Abstract/Summary:
The family Elateridae, is one of the more interesting coleopteran groups due to the clicking apparatus. Only a few elaterid subfamilies and tribes have been well-studied. The elaterid tribe Pomachiliini, the subject of this study, has several representative genera in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, Europe, North America, and New Zealand. The systematics of this tribe is poorly understood. A number of genera placed in Pomachiliini were not natural members of this tribe. The tribe Pomachiliini is characterized by a complete carina across the front of the frons, in some genera it may be elevated or protruding, weak medially or curved; a prosternum with sutures double, with or without antennal pocket; a mesosternal cavity open to the mesepimeron and to the mesepisternum; the elytral apex truncate, rounded, denticulate or spinose; and tarsomere claws simple and asetose at base.;The following genera are described and illustrated herein: Gabryella , a new Pomachiliini genus for Chile and Argentina, with four new species consisting of: Gabryella attenuata (Solier 1851) new comb., G. umbilicata (Candeze 1859) new comb., G. e1guetina Arias new species, G. nancyta Arias new species, G. terryae Arias new species and G. wulfklonii Arias new species; Alyma, a new Pomachiliini Chilean genus, with three species A. pallipes (Solier 1851) new. comb., A. lawlerina new species, A. shapirina new species; Lynnyella, a new Pomachiliini Chilean genus, with two new species consisting of: Lynnyella suturalis (Candeze 1865), L. dieguita Arias new species, L. gerhardti Arias new species and L. juanjosey Arias new species. The geographic distributions of these genera and their species are mapped and a key to species is provided.;A phylogenetic analysis using PAUP revealed that only the following taxa are true Pomachiliini: Alyma new genus, Cosmesus Candeze, Deromecus Solier, Gabryella new genus, Lynnyella new genus, Mecothorax Solier, Medonia Fleutiaux, Nancyarena new name, Podonema Solier, and Pomachilius Eschscholtz. The following genera are removed from Pomachiliini: Anius Candeze, Agriotella Brown, Bedresia Solier, Betarmon Kiesenwetter, Betarmonides Schwarz, Chesotraxus Fleautiaux, Dulius Fleautiaux, Heschsatroxus Candeze, Idiotarmon Binaghi, Isidus Mulsant & Rey, Leptoschema Horn, Panspoeus Sharp, Psiloniscus Candeze, Smilicerus Candeze, and Somomecus Solier.
