Abstract/Summary:
Several new polymeric biocides were prepared and studied using monomeric oxazolidinone derivatives. The monomers were the following materials: 4-(acryloyl methylate)4-ethyl-2-oxazolidinone, 4-(crotonyl methylate)-4-ethyl-2-oxazalidinone, 4-(2{dollar}spprime{dollar}-methylacryloyl methylate)4-ethyl-2-oxazolidinone, and 4-(3{dollar}spprime,3spprime{dollar}-dimethylacryloyl methylate)4-ethyl-2-oxazolidinone. These monomers were homopolymerized and chlorinated to give the corresponding activated polymers. Also, these monomers were co-polymerized with acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, ethylene, and styrene to give water insoluble polymers, and, which chlorinated, are potent disinfectants. Emulsion polymerizations were also carried out with these monomers and acrylonitrile, acrylic acid, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, and styrene in efforts to make water-borne coatings that, once cast, act as surface-active disinfectants. These monomers were also grafted on to poly(vinyl chloride), poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(styrene), poly(ethylene), and poly(acrylonitrile) backbones to give unique polymeric disinfectants. Polyurethanes were prepared from hydrolyzing the poly(vinyl acetate) copolymers with the oxazolidinones and reacting them with diphenylmethanediisocyanate. Polyurethanes were also prepared by reacting the isocyanate with 4,4-dihydroxymethyl-2-oxazolidinone. Also, polymeric imidazolidinones were prepared and chlorinated for disinfection purposes. All halogenated polymers are biocidal materials, which can inactivate most common water-borne bacteria and can be regenerated by exposure to free halogen if they are exhausted by disinfection applications.; Several quaternary ammonium N-halamines were prepared where a hydantoin moiety was incorporated into a pyridine ring, which was then reacted with an alkyl halide to give the quaternary ammonium salt. These dual-functionality disinfectants display biocidal activity, and the stabilities have been studied.
