Abstract/Summary:
A methodology for developing mathematical models of large scale fuel cell stacks is described. As an example of this methodology, a model of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) stack was developed. The model was verified by comparing its output to experimental measurements taken from an actual PEMFC stack. As an example application a simulated experiment, using the PEMFC stack mathematical model to generate data, was conducted using Design Of Experiments (DOE) procedures and analysis techniques. Results from the simulated experiment are presented with conclusions regarding the usefulness of this method for investigating the effect of design and operating parameters on fuel cell system performance. Conclusions are drawn regarding the modeling methodology and simulated experimentation, and recommendations are made for improving the modeling methodology and for developing a systematic design procedure for fuel cell systems.
