Abstract/Summary:
Using a pre-treatment/post-treatment within subject design, the efficacy of SMS (short message service) text based smoking cessation support to increase readiness to quit smoking among individuals with non-acute mental health disorders, was evaluated. During the treatment phase, participants received text messages from Smokefree Txt for 30 consecutive days. Measures on three variables theorized to be indicative of motivational readiness among individuals with mental health disorders were assessed at baseline and after the treatment phase. As hypothesized, the number of cigarettes smoked in the last 7-days declined significantly, ratings of intentions to quit increased significantly, and depression symptoms decreased following treatment phase.
