Abstract/Summary:
This study investigates the Spirit language in the Second Temple Jewish literature as a possible source for the eschatological role of the Holy Spirit in the Pauline writings. It seeks to determine whether and to what degree Paul is indebted to the Second Temple Jewish literature as he elaborates on eschatological pneumatology. It also shows the interconnection between eschatology and the Holy Spirit in some of the key theological questions that Paul addresses in relation to salvation, sonship (adoption), ethics, and resurrection.;If the analysis of the Spirit language in the Second Temple Jewish literature demonstrates Paul's indebtedness, this will help one to appreciate the possible source(s) in the study of Paul's eschatological pneumatology.;The first two chapters examine the Spirit language in the respective literature, analyzing and selecting relevant texts for further study. Chapters three and four examines the Spirit language in the Pauline texts giving special attention to the eschatological aspect of the Spirit's role. While Chapter three analyzes the eschatological function of the Holy Spirit in four Pauline metaphors, Chapter four examines language of three different theological motifs in Paul in relation to the eschatological function of the Spirit.;This study concludes that Paul was indebted to the Old Testament and was possibly influenced by or at least aware of the Second Temple Jewish literature and then reshaped it.;There is no question that Paul makes frequent use of the Old Testament in his letters. However, a comparative reading of the Old Testament and Pauline writings on the subject of eschatological pneumatology shows some progression between the two. It is this writer's assumption that the Second Temple Jewish literature holds some answers to this progression of thought from the Old Testament to the Pauline writings in regard to the eschatological pneumatology. This research attempts to investigate Paul's indebtedness to the Second Temple Jewish literature, analyzing Jewish Second Temple literature as well as the Pauline writings in regard to pneumatology and eschatology.
