Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this project is to propose an alternative to the dominant methodology of contemporary Korean preaching by using selected aspects of the methodology of Jesus' preaching as the criteria. The basic resources used in this research include: the result of surveys on Korean preaching, books, articles, published sermons, dissertations regarding Korean preaching, studies on church growth, sociological studies, and selected sermons of Jesus recorded in the Synoptic Gospels.;This dissertation consists of four chapters. In order to appraise the dominant methodology and problems in contemporary Korean preaching, the first chapter examines the history of Korean preaching. This chapter enables us to understand the historical context and the drastic cultural evolution to grasp the contemporary sociocultural context. The final section will articulate the current problems of contemporary Korean preaching.;The second chapter discusses Jesus' methodology of preaching, dividing it into three sections. The centrality of preaching in Jesus' ministry, testified by each evangelist is discussed. The second section investigates the nature and function of Jesus' preaching. Then, the last section will examine the main roles of a preacher as Jesus described them.;The third chapter deals with Jesus' use of various communicative techniques. The nature and attributes of Jesus' authority and adaptation to his audience is explored. The next section discusses his use of various literary forms and rhetorical devices. The last section examines his use of simple and concrete language, including the use of imaginative language for impressiveness.;The final chapter draws upon the research results and draws some inferences about contemporary Korean preaching in its methodology and use of communicative techniques. The conclusion of this dissertation summarizes the findings and provides some suggestions for an alternative methodology for the contemporary Korean church.
