The objective of this study is to explore what William H. Schubert (1986) calls the "knowledge base of non-school learning in the lives of (African-American urban) students (p.109)." "What does the family environment teach (Schubert, 1986, p.109)?" "And, how can teachers take an interest in students' family life ... (Schubert, 1986, p.109)?"; "The African American Single Mother: A Pedagogical Exploration of the Non-School Curriculum," examines the African-American single mother insider's view of living, surviving, teaching and schooling her children in order to: (1) better understand the social context (artifacts of culture, race, gender and class) of an African-American urban student; (2) gain a greater insight into the experiences formed through non-school curriculum (those episodes, learning experiences that occur outside the traditional classroom); and (3) find ways to incorporate and address these issues humanely in the classroom.
