Abstract/Summary:
When performing Baroque music, today's player of the modern oboe is presented with a unique challenge and opportunity because recent advances in the understanding of Baroque era instruments and performance practices have paved the way for a new approach by him when performing Baroque music.;This dissertation contains, in the first chapter, a discussion of these advances in the understanding of Baroque era instruments and performance practices as well as descriptions of the changes in the oboes in use since the time of J.S. Bach. The second chapter offers an outline of the approach that the period oboe player and the modern oboe player would use when performing the music of J.S. Bach, while the third deals with the approach used by players of the period and modern oboes d'amore.
