Abstract/Summary:
Leaders and writers of evangelical Christian schools insist that the Bible should be the basis for every aspect of the Christian school. They apply this principle to the curriculum of every course offering including those in the area of music. They further assert that the Bible should be studied for concepts and data that can be integrated with the subject matter of each course. The purpose, then, of this study was to investigate the references to music in the Bible to see what implications they have for the purpose, goals, objectives, and methods of music education in evangelical Christian schools.;The study begins with an explanation of the evangelical Christian philosophy of education. The evangelical world view is first explained, and then the tenets of the philosophy of education that is derived from that world view. Foundational concepts, the purpose, goals, and objectives of evangelical Christian school education are presented.;The majority of the study is dedicated to the investigation of the references to music in the Bible. The references are analyzed for their implications regarding the origin, purpose, uses, and effect of music. It is determined that, according to the Bible, music originates in the nature of God, and that the majority of the references to music relate to the use of music for worship and other religious activities.;Data resulting from the investigation of the biblical references to music is then synthesized with the description of the purpose, goals, and objectives of the evangelical philosophy of education described earlier. It is shown that music education contributes to the fulfillment of the purpose and goals of evangelical Christian education. The purpose of evangelical music education is determined to be the development of the musicianship of all students such that they reveal and reflect the image of God through their music-making. It is posited that the principles from the biblical references suggest goals, objectives, methods, and activities for evangelical Christian school music education. Foundational concepts, the purpose, goals and objectives, principles for implementation, and standards for teachers are presented in a systematic format.
