This study examines the perceptions of college and university fund raisers of what constitutes inappropriate fund raising behaviors. A normative structure for college and university fund raising was found. These normative patterns include three inviolable norms prohibiting misappropriation of gifts, institutional disregard, and exploitation of institutional resources. Six admonitory normative patterns also emerged which include proscriptions against: donor manipulation, exaggeration of professional experience, dishonest solicitation, institutional mission abandonment, commission based compensation and unreasonable enforcement of pledges. The study also examines the influence of social and personal sources of social control on the espousal of fund raising norms. |
