Abstract/Summary:
Problem gambling was examined in an ethnically-diverse college student population in order to determine possible predictors of that behavior. The study hypothesized that gambling expectancies and present time perspectives would be predictive of problem gambling behavior, as measured by the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS). A gambling outcome expectancy questionnaire was developed for this study and results indicated that all three of its factors (Risk-Taking, Arousal, and Negative Effects) were predictive of gambling behavior. Also, use of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) found that gambling was associated with its Present-Fatalistic and Past-Negative factors. These findings facilitate the development of a potential cognitive profile for college-student gamblers, which may have important implications for the prevention and treatment of gambling.
