Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the roles and role perceptions of each member of the physical education student teaching triad. Three triads, each consisting of one student teacher, cooperating teacher and university supervisor, participated in this study. Data were collected by interviews, observations, video analysis, surveys, field notes, and a focus group meeting. Three case narratives were compiled according to emergent themes of each participant. A cross-case analysis compared similarities and differences among the triads. Additionally, four non-participant student teachers and their cooperating teachers completed a survey. The results indicated that role perceptions had an impact on the effectiveness of student teaching triads. Unclear role definitions and a lack of communication led to some dysfunction within the triads. One solution to problems common in student teaching triads would be to provide triad members with a variety of collaborative communication skills.
