Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this proposed study is to determine if grade 11 Pennsylvania System of School Assessment math and reading scores can be predicted based on the student's grade 8 PSSA math and reading scores, their grade point average and level of course work in high school. The ability to accurately predict success on the grade 11 PSSA test as early as the fall of their freshmen year when their eighth grade scores are received, will enable schools to identify students who need additional help. That will provide educators with two years to modify curriculum and instruction for these students in order that they might have a better chance for success in achieving state standards.; Multivariate correlation statistics will be used to determine how 8 th grade PSSA scores, GPA, and level of course work both singly and in combination, can be used to predict grade 11 PSSA scores. Data will be gathered for all juniors in the Classes of 2000, 2001, and 2002 at Penn Manor High School in Millersville, Pennsylvania. Regressions between the three classes will be compared to determine the value added effect of the school program.; The demand for accountability in schools has intensified with the January 2002 signing of the revised Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Schools will be expected to utilize research-based methods to improve student performance. Analysis of available data should be an effective tool in achieving this goal.
