Abstract/Summary:
In this research, we study methods to sustain real-time communications over ATM networks in the presence of faults. Real-time communications is concerned with the delivery of messages that have deadlines associated with them. Connection-oriented communications service is well-suited for applications that demand delay guarantees. A critical part of connection oriented communications is the design of a connection admission control algorithm that makes admission decisions. A fault tolerant real-time connection requires that its messages be delivered by their deadlines even in the presence of faults. We develop innovative fault tolerant connection admission control algorithms. Our fault tolerance approach uses an integrated spatial and temporal redundancy scheme. We provide algorithms that determine the redundancy parameters. To aid in delay analysis, we develop a generic traffic model to describe the traffic of connections in the network. We then develop an analytical method to derive the end-to-end delay bounds taking into account the impact of faults.; The contributions of this research are: (1) Study of fault tolerant connection management approaches. (2) Design of a framework for fault tolerant real-time connection management. (3) Extensive delay analysis for fault tolerant real-time communications. (4) Design compatible with existing network technologies.
