Abstract/Summary:
The Livre septieme of Phalese, starting from an old-fashioned collection of pieces mainly from France and the Southern Netherlands, moved into a probable didactic role that was apparently responsible for the addition of an instruction page to the anthology in 1601. From 1608, other printers in other centers produced editions. This resulted in a wider range of compositions, including works in Dutch, and the eventual adaptation of the anthology to the needs of the Dutch Republic.; The dissertation discusses each of the editions in turn, with full descriptions of every copy. Through detailed bibliographical analysis, it reveals much about the development of the volume, as well as about the history of musical taste and distribution.; Each edition is used to lead into a number of more general issues in music--didactic practices, stylistic considerations, etc--as well as such topics in bibliography and the history of printing as working methods of individual printers, interrelationships among various printers and publishers in the Low Countries of the period, and commerce in books, music typefonts, and paper.
