Abstract/Summary:
An integrated packaging system design methodology is presented for advanced developing countries. First, surrounding environments of packaging systems are identified. It is shown that a macro environment consists of socio-economic, marketing, ecological, political, and legal systems; whereas, a micro environment includes other elements of marketing systems such as production and distribution.; Second, the key dimensions of the macro/micro environments which have significant influences on the scope and the size of the packaging systems in advanced developing countries are determined. Decision elements in the design of packaging systems are also investigated. Then, two paths of integration are demonstrated. A vertical path of integration between the key dimensions of the surrounding environments and the decision elements of the packaging system is presented. A horizontal path of integration among the decision elements of the packaging system is also described.; Finally, a case example is presented which illustrates the possible advantages of a vertical and horizontal integration model. Based on the results of the study, it is shown that packaging system design in advanced developing countries requires a two-path integration methodology. The importance of a system concept and usage of a systematic and comprehensive approach is emphasized.
