Abstract/Summary:
The premise behind Supply Chain Management (SCM) is that the sharing of information and coordination of strategies among firms in a supply chain will lead to a reduction in total logistics costs and enhanced value delivered to the customer. While information exchange is consistently cited as a key factor to successful SCM implementation, there has been a surprising lack of empirical research on information exchange in the logistics literature. Research to identify factors that lead to increased levels of information exchange among supply chain members is needed.; A theoretical model of the antecedents of information exchange among supply chain members was examined by collecting data from logistics managers in manufacturing firms. Results from canonical correlation analysis found that information quality and relationship commitment were positively related to strategic information exchange. Three organizational antecedents were not significantly related to information exchange.; The empirical results suggest that logistics managers need to focus on developing strong relationships with supply chain partners and delivering accurate, timely, and easy-to-use information to other firms to support the critical task of increased information exchange in supply chain settings.
