Abstract/Summary:
The problem of determining the force on a ship or body due to an arbitrary incident wave system is considered. The solution is formulated in terms of a linear integral equation in time and space using a time-dependent Green's function. A numerical scheme is developed that solves the integral equation directly in the time domain. The integral formulation is also shown to be valid for determination of the potential due to a nonimpulsive body motion. The potential on arbitrary bodies and the resulting forces were found for both zero and steady forward speed. Results are compared by Fourier transform with more traditional frequency-domain methods.
