Abstract/Summary:
The strength of any organization is in its leadership. Without exception, when governance is marked by passivity, apathy, and irresponsibility, the quality of life in that locale is severely diminished. People suffer as their leaders flop. In Holy Scripture, the Lord of the earth placed His worldwide organization under the charge of masculine leadership. While women would play a prominent support role, it is the men who were singled out to fill the primary places of governance. Without aggressive, visionary men in strategic places of leadership, the Great Commission mission is surely compromised. This project was designed to increase the confidence and competence of male leadership at Englewood Baptist Church. The design was two-fold: (1) to catalyze the spiritual leadership of 200+ men through the delivery of six expository sermons on biblical manhood; and (2) to usher twelve of those men through an additional six-week small-group experience, focused on the practicalities of spiritual leadership. This project was both quantitative and qualitative in nature. The expository preaching component was measured through an online survey sent out to participants after the conclusion of the experience. This survey invited the men to rate their perceived growth in leadership as a result of the sermon series. The success of the small-group experience was measured through a questionnaire provided for the participants following the final session. The results of this project verify that expository preaching is indeed a highly effective method for empowering and equipping men for leadership roles in the church. In addition, a follow-up small-group experience is an effective method for catalyzing further growth and for moving men from a passive to an active posture of leadership. My desire is that this project will serve as the spark of a lifelong fire in my heart to see men empowered and equipped for leadership roles in the home, in the church, and in society. In addition, it is my hope that this project may be of benefit to other pastors who share my passion for a resurgence of biblical manhood.
