Abstract/Summary:
This anthology includes a selection of short stories grouped in twelve categories (four in the 19th century and eight in the 20th century). All of the selections appeared in Spanish-language newspapers in the states of Arizona and California and were chosen according to historical and formal criteria. Included are stories representative of all periods from the most impersonal narrations of a late romanticism to the situational tales written after World War II.;This study delves into the principally Chicano Hispanic literature that lies hidden in periodical publications in the United States, especially in the Southwest. It ponders the value of the Chicano literary tradition that these texts represent and it examines the rooting-uprooting-rerooting process (arraigo-desarraigo-arraigo) that this literature has experienced from the time it was an indigenous literature and completely Hispanic-Mexican, to the time when it was written by Mexican immigrants and exiles at the beginning of the 20th century, to when, at last, its peculiar linguistic and thematic characteristics define it as a literature in contact with, but separate from, the two nuclei from which it is derived.;The anthology is preceeded by an introduction on Chicano Literature before the "boom" using these periodical publications as sources. It is followed by five appendices: a list of Spanish language newspapers in Arizona and California, an exhaustive list of the short stories found in more than twelve periodical publications in Arizona and California, a selection of poems also found in these publications, a list of folletinesque novels which appeared principally in El Tucsonense (1915-1957), and a list of references to Hispanic theatrical activity in Arizona and California since the late 19th century.
