Abstract/Summary:
The development of the psychology of men and masculinity over the past decade has sparked the discussion among American scholars regarding masculinity ideology as a socialized role formed by stereotypes and standards. Researchers have extensively studied adolescent and young adult male's construction of masculinity, and how this may have an impact on various areas of their lives. The present study was designed to examine predictors of traditional masculinity ideology, life satisfaction, and marital satisfaction using the theoretical frameworks of the Gender-Role Strain Paradigm and psychological androgyny. Participants included 231 White American, married males between 35-65 years of age who resided in the United States. Results indicated that lower educational level, younger age, and being born in the United States were significant predictors of higher endorsement of traditional masculinity ideology. Additionally, higher marital satisfaction and fewer hours employed were significant predictors of higher life satisfaction, while higher importance of religion significantly predicted higher marital satisfaction. Further, men endorsed low to moderate traditional masculinity ideology, and moderate strength towards their exploration and commitment of ethnic identity. These findings recommend the need to continue to examine these variables among middle-aged men. Therefore, clinical implications were discussed.
