A Multiple Regression Analysis of Functions Influencing Mentoring Satisfaction of U.S. Army Asian-American Healthcare Administration Mentees

Abstract/Summary:
Mentoring satisfaction can enhance career satisfaction and career progression. The Army mentorship handbook serves as the Army's guide to effective mentorship and progression to the senior ranks. Despite these efforts, Asian-American Healthcare Administrators (HCAs) represent 1.7% of lieutenant colonels and above within their perspective field while representing over 10% of the total HCA officer population. The purpose of this quantitative nonexperimental study was to measure if, and to what extent, the mentoring functions of career support, psychosocial support, and role modeling predict overall mentoring satisfaction of Asian-American Healthcare Administrators (HCAs) in the United States Army. A multiple linear regression was conducted to examine whether the mentoring functions predict overall mentoring satisfaction. Seventy-two Asian-American Healthcare Administrators volunteered to complete an online survey from SurveyMonkey. One survey containing demographic questions and the Mentoring Functions Questionnaire - 9 (MFQ-9) with overall mentoring satisfaction was used to answer the research questions. It was found that career support (r(72) = .0292, p<.05) was the only significant predictor of overall mentoring satisfaction. The psychosocial support mentoring function a= .17, p= .21 was a predictor but not at a statistical significant level. The last mentoring function, role modeling a = -.05, p = .68 was the only function resulting in a negative prediction but not at a significant level. Research examining mentoring functions of the entire Asian-American officer population would expand the value of this study. Recommendations for Army organizations include increasing Asian-American HCA mentees level of career support functions and developing an Asian-American mentoring program.
