Abstract/Summary:
Regardless of the type of organization or industry, managers across all levels have the responsibility for making decisions that impact others---one of these decisions is the selection of employees through hiring. With globalization and the changing face of the U.S. workforce, the applicant pool is more diverse today than it has ever been. Additionally, with changes in technologies such as social media, this has impacted the way in which organizations recruit for potential candidates, and hiring managers are challenged with competing for top talent. The impact on recruitment brought on by changes in technologies is an important consideration for management since the way in which an organization recruits for talent has an impact on the likelihood of retaining those individuals. As competition for top talent continues to grow, it will be prudent for hiring managers and human resource management practitioners to ensure their hiring practices and decisions are guided by ethical principles as candidates are likely to be drawn to organizations with a reputation for ethical practices. Through extensive review of the literature and an evidence based research methodology, this dissertation critically analyzed these ethical challenges in hiring and how individual and organizational ethical considerations impact decision-making in hiring in the U.S. private sector. In addition, this dissertation examined organizational culture, and specifically, how organizational culture impacts ethical decision-making in hiring. Based on findings from the review of the literature, the proposed research questions are answered and recommendations for ensuring ethical decision-making in hiring are discussed.
