Abstract/Summary:
This study explored the experiences of late adolescent and young adults, specific to indigenous Southerners, who converted from Christianity to Islam. The author focused on the experiences of these individuals prior to, during, and after their transition away from Christianity.;This research showed that many professed Christians are converting from Christianity to Islam. Insufficient doctrinal training and discipleship both in the church and their homes were two major contributing elements causing this realignment.;The rationale behind this study concerned those in this age demographic who redefined their faith orientation after leaving their family and community's religious influence. The author conducted a qualitative exploration of these individuals who grew up in a Judeo-Christian culture. This exploration consisted of personal interviews to capture their lived experiences and explore their transition from Christianity to Islam.;Chapter 1 provided the reader with an introduction to the rise of Islam in America. The researcher provided the impetus for the research project, its relevance in today's society, and its purpose. Additionally, the researcher outlined this project's organization.;Chapter 2 examined existing literature that highlighted the nature and characteristics of spirituality and religion. Furthermore, the researcher considered the works of Rambo (1993), Fowler (1991), and Mezirow (2000) as they applied to religious conversion experiences.;Chapter 3 outlined the qualitative research methodology used for this study. Included were the participant inclusion criteria and interview procedures. Also, the researcher outlined data collection strategies. Finally, the researcher considered the ethical dimensions of this study in terms of trustworthiness, reliability, and validity.;Chapter 4 provided an overview of the research findings. Themes were outlined for each research question. Additionally, for each theme, the author identified distinctions among participants.;Chapter 5 concluded this study with a review of the research and interview questions. From this, the researcher identified the subsequent implications of each theme and how they affect Christians.
