Abstract/Summary:
Developing from transplanted offshoots of British civilization, sharing frontier conditions and sending agricultural, technological and military materials, information and personnel back and forth across the Pacific Ocean, the United States and Australia are bonded by history and circumstance.; This study is concerned with literature as the embodiment of attitudes and beliefs that define, for a whole body of people, their perception of reality which, in turn, affects the way they behave.; Through the technique of pairing Timothy Flint and Alexander Harris as representative writers of the 1830's; Mark Twain and Henry Lawson at the turn of the century and at the fulcrum of their respective literary traditions; and Willa Cather and Henry Handel Richardson, post-frontier authors of the 1920's and 1930's, the comparative roots and subsequent development of literary traditions in the United States and Australia are explored.
