Abstract/Summary:
This study investigated the lived experience of Recall Healing (RH) using the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) methodology. Recall Healing is a mind-body medicine modality that utilizes life experiences, somatic awareness, and client genealogy to promote healing. Individuals learn principles to understand and work with physiological, psychological, and behavioral symptoms or diagnoses. To date, most published material on Recall Healing consists of anecdotal case observations. Only two systematic qualitative pilot studies have been carried out on the experience of Recall Healing for serious illnesses. The purpose of this study was to bridge this gap in the literature and to illuminate the lived experience of Recall Healing.;Six individuals who participated in at least one workshop or three Recall Healing sessions, were asked the question, "What does it mean to experience Recall Healing?" The interviews were transcribed and analyzed following the IPA approach. Eight common themes emerged that capture the experience of RH for these six participants: (a) beyond traditional medical treatment: conviction and belief in the healing effectiveness of RH, (b) development and application of self-healing skills, (c) a conscious shift in perception of the meaning of physical symptoms, (d) recognition of multi-generational interpersonal influences on health, (e) increased psychological health and well-being, (f) deepened relational connection, (g) deepened spirituality, and (h) heightened sense of purpose, meaning, and fulfillment. Utilizing the words of the participants, the experience of RH is described and the meaning of this healing modality for these individuals is identified. The findings are then compared to the current literature and future research is suggested.
