Abstract/Summary:
This theoretical dissertation addresses the fact that corrections does not have an adequate theory. It is patent that the praxis of corrections today is not adequate, and it is not adequate because of poor theory. A review of past society placement of people in correctional settings reveals failing results. Failure to guide persons into productive and meaningful lives is evident by overwhelming recidivism rates. Corrections is the only operation that grows in manpower and expanded facilities by failing.;This dissertation reviews the history of corrections and what theories have been used and have failed. From this review, there is developed the concept that man, to be truly free, must have a base on which to build a moral life. What is practiced today in a correctional setting does not produce such a base. Thus, the need for an adequate theory of correction for moral education. Corrections ought to provide moral education, and for this to occur, true liberal education, or education for the free, ought to be the mission of corrections.;Having identified an adequate theory for correction, the question then to be addressed is, "What is correctional theory for moral education?" The answer to this question is to extend philosophical Educology, as developed by Dr. Elizabeth Steiner, into corrections.;Based upon this theory, a true liberal education, or education for the free, comes forth. The praxis that flows from these theories then gives corrections the means not to fail by giving persons a true opportunity to become free men. That is, persons can choose a moral life and fully understand the act.;For men to be truly free, they must on their own, choose to lead moral lives and understand why. Liberal Education, as set forth in philosophical Educology, gives one the means to be a free man.
