Abstract/Summary:
The purposes of the study were to develop local norms for the Slingerland Screening Tests for Identifying Children with Specific Language Disability, to determine the usefulness of the Slingerland Tests in identifying students who need special education resource room assistance, and to determine the relationship between scores on the Slingerland Tests and scores on a test of intelligence.;The results of the study indicated that local norms were established for the Slingerland Tests, that the Slingerland Tests had a high degree of accuracy as a screening instrument, and that there was a .57 correlation between the Slingerland Tests and the OLMAT.;Two hundred thirty-six students in grades two, three, and four of a rural Delaware school system were given the appropriate form of the Slingerland tests. Each protocol was scored according to the Manual procedures and percentiles were calculated for each grade based on correct (non-error) scores. Three groups of students were studied. Group one was thirty students who scored below the sixteenth percentile on the Slingerland Tests and were placed in special education. Group two was twelve students who scored above the sixteenth percentile and were placed in special education. Group three contained six students who scored below the sixteenth percentile and were not placed in special education. The Slingerland Tests were correlated with the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient.
