A research investigation of the experiences of the baby boomer generation with knowledge transfer in the project management industry

This research reports on the results of the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation and the potential impact on the project management industry. The emphasis is on the transfer of knowledge of project management skills from this generation to younger generations through mentoring. There are currently four generations in the workplace today and as Baby Boomers retire, it is anticipated that a large volume of knowledge and skills will leave the workplace with them. The purpose of this qualitative research study is to determine how the retirement of the Baby Boomer generation will impact the project management industry and what companies will need to do to prepare for a vital workforce and build project managers for the future and identify what will motivate Baby Boomers to continue to work and/or volunteer to participate in mentoring programs for the development of younger generation employees in the workplace.
