There exists a neutral sodium atoms layer in the 80~110 km range. Study the sodium layer is helpful for us understanding the dynamic process and chemical process in the MLT region. And the sodium layer can be as a good tracer for wave motions. So study the sodium layer is important in the upper atmospheric science. Lidar has been proved as a very useful tool in study the sodium layer. There are many studies and observations of the sodium layer in the world after 1970's, but it is blankness in China before the first successful sodium fluorescence lidar in China was made and the sodium layer observation and study was carried by the people in Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics (WIPM). The thesis will tell that the author of this thesis have observed the sodium layer over Wuhan(31oN, 114Eo), China, and studied the sodium layer detailedly based on the observation data for several years. In this thesis, the principle and hard ware components of the WIPM sodium fluorescence lidar, its data acquisition, processing and analysis were described detailedly first. Under this base, the author gives the mainly study results of the sodium layer over Wuhan, with the lidar observation data. There are: 1, The general average characteristics and variation rules of the sodium layer over Wuhan are given, which are studied on the characteristic and variation of the sodium layer distribution. The results of the general average distribution, seasonal variation, and short time variation of the sodium layer over Wuhan are given, which were compared to the foreign results. It is indicated that different sodium layer have different distribution, and it is indicated especially that the sodium layer short time variation over Wuhan is larger than that over other locations in the world. The occurrence frequency of the stratification and the nighttime average variation of the sodium layer are also given. And a special sodium layer stratification in our observation data is reported and analyzed detailedly. 2, A few special phenomena of the sodium layer over Wuhan are reported and studied.
