The importance of low rank coal upgrading and the significance of briquette water resistance for briquette storage and transportation were illustrated in this paper. The mechanism of low rank coal binderless briquetting and briquette water resistant performance were discussed.2 non-water resistant briquettes and 1 water resistant briquette produced in the HPU pilot production line were studied as research objects. Effect of heat treatment temperature and holding time on the water resistance improvement of the non-water resistant briquettes was studied. Coal tar emulsion, silicone emulsion and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution of different concentrations were prepared as waterproofing agents. The water resistance change after waterproofing agent treatment was studied. Infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), contact angle measurement and other methods were employed to study the change of water sorption ratio, water sorption rate, contact angle, oxygen functional groups content, and moisture holding capacity (MHC) after heat treatment and waterproofing agent treatment. The relationship of water sorption mass and sorption time was studied. The mechanism of briquette water sorption and the mechanism of briquette water resistance improvement by heat treatment and waterproofing agent were discussed.
