Bourdieu's Sociological Thought Of Literature And Art

The theory of traditional Literary Sociology used to bind cultural activities with a social factor in a "straight-line" mode of thinking that ignored the complex relationship between literature and society.But Pierre Bourdieu's Literary Sociology starts from the concept of "Literary Field" to clarify the developing in the dynamic structure about"literary and social"."Literature Field" is an objectively social space which has its own logic or law of operation and targets the production of artworks as symbolic meaning.With the purpose for "art for art's sake",cultural activities in the "Literary Field" calling all actors engaged in artistic activities to establish their own symbolic powers with self-discipline and to resist the direct interference from economic and political forces in the external social background.Therefore,using the concept of "Literary Field" to study Bourdieu's Literary Sociology thought means clear explains the following questions:From the perspective of literary production,how has literary production been occurred in the internal structure of the "Literary Field",how has a "legal" art concept been created by the "author" and recognized by everyone in the field?From the perspective of literary reception,how has the concept of "legal" Art required "readers" in social space to "read" with the Disinterested Aesthetic Attitude,how has the internal principle and condition about literary distinguished the identities of different readers in society?From the point of view of the social function about literature and art,how has the literature and art in the space of the "Field of Cultural Production " as a value and meaning production activity accomplished a Symbolique Violence,how had the literary activists who appeared as the images of "intellectuals" intervened in the social life to exert their symbolique authority.Based on the analysis of the structure and characteristics about "Literary Field",literary production activities,literary reception activities and the social function of literature and art,the paper can be divided into four chapters:Chapter ?,from the overall point of view,makes a general introduction to Bourdieu's Sociology Theory,core concepts and his research on Cultural and Artistic Activities.As the research object,Cultural and Artistic Activities not only occupied length of a piece of writing in Bourdieu's sociology research,but also contributed to the completion of the construction of his Sociology Theory building.As a symbolic cultural practice that forms the basis of contemporary social domination,it has happened in the autonomous space of:Literary Field”.Therefore,this means that Bourdieu's Literary Sociology was based on the analysis about the concept of "Literary Field".After analyzing the structure,characteristics and key role of:Literary Field" as a methodology,this chapter also take the production of French Literary Field as an example to depict the relationship between the literature and society.Chapter ? starts from the internal view of literary production,studying on how has been the literary "illusion" as a kind of "legal concept about literature" created by all the actors in the Literary Field.Bourdieu's theory of literary production opposed the view that pointed out the author was the sole person in charge of the artwork,on the contrary,he believed that the production of the meaning and value about the artwork was done by all authors' collective in the Literary Field,and even by the relationship between author and the reader.And around the definition of the value and mean about the "legal concept about literature",authors also distinguished each other and been in a competing relationship with their right to define it.It is this dynamic structure that shares the literature "illusion" in authors' competition with each other,that has contributed to the dynamic change process of literary production in time and space.At last,through the art production of Manet and Duchamp in the history of art as an example,it reveals the evolution process of the "legal concept about literature" in the Literary Field.Chapter ? starts from the social view of literary reception,studying on the social background conditions of reader's reception which required by a "pure gaze" on disinterested.The requirement of "pure gaze" in literary and art reception activities in the Literary Field was based on the theory of "Aesthetical Judgment" in Kant's Aesthetics.The transcendental universality of Kant's Aesthetics was,in fact,achieved through a series of negative distinctions.The "Aesthetical Judgment" of "pure gaze"completed the distinction between "Aesthetic Taste" and sensory angenehmen in Literary Field with the form of performertive.In turn,it also completed the social identity distinction about readers with different "Aesthetic Taste" in the level of literary appreciation on readers' reading ability.Finally,through the investigation of aesthetic acceptance constructed on the social stratum identity in contemporary French society,Bourdieu revealed the role of literary and artistic activities in the construction of social structure.Chapter ? from the perspective of the relationship between literature society,probed into the social function of literature and art in Bourdieu's thought of Literature Sociology.Literature and art,and even culture in a broad sense,not only played as the superstructure to the economic foundation,but also,has been completed the reproduction of the social inequality structure in the form of Symbolique Violence created by the Literary Field,in the contemporary capitalist society.Among them,the national education system which is closely related to literary and artistic reception activities,and the "intellectual" group closely related to cultural and literary production,were the main places and main implementers for Cultural Capital to exert its social function.Therefore,if cultural and artistic activities are going to get rid of the dominant function in the field of symbolic symbols,they need to unite all the intellectual participants in literary and artistic activities,in order to maintain the independent posture of the Literary Field,so as to counter the erosion of political and economic factors.
