Calligraphy as an art develops from man's need to chronicle and communicate about the human condition. From ancient times to modern, the traces of calligraphy can be seen in both the histories of the East and the West. This is especially true across China and Southeast Asia, which are deeply influenced by its culture.Different styles of calligraphy have appeared as changes occured across both historical and cultural contexts. These changes display the attitude called “contention of a hundred schools of thought”.Time is passing, the world is advancing, and culture is evolving. The world presents a trend toward diversified development, and at the same time, calligraphic art is constantly changing. In a global environment, the development of the times not only allows Chinese and Western cultures to have deeper exchanges, but also brings tremendous impact and reflection on thousands of years of traditional calligraphy.Modern calligraphic art unconsciously began to change and innovate, both passively and actively, both with and without intention in the environment. It should be clarified that the "modern calligraphy" discussed in this paper is based on the concept of "modernity",not on the time of "modernity".As for "modernity",the author more agrees with Foucault's definition of modernity, that is,modernity means a "critical temperament and attitude".Based on this, many calligraphers who live in the present but write entirely in the traditional norms are not included in the scope of this paper.Inoue Yu-ichi,one of the famous Japanese calligraphers of the late 1950 s,and Wang Dongling, one of the famous Chinese calligraphers of the late 1980 s,created in the current of their times;in the whirlpool of culture,in the metamorphosis of traditional culture and modern context mixed with their own unique life experience and perception of life. They think and create under the change of times and with the impact of culture, incorporating their own unique cultural perspective---transformations incorporating both contemporary style and innovation in the art of calligraphic writing art.Previous calligraphy research tends to the theoretical and encompasses total overall meaning, but as calligraphy has gradually become a form of expressing a writer's artistic and inner feelings, the study of calligraphy innovation should refer to the influence of specifics from the calligraphers' personal life;the experience of the creative process and various artistic ideas;and self-analysis of their own calligraphic style ' s evolution, eventually becoming a convincing and expressive study. This paper chose Inoue Yu-ichi and Wang Dongling as study objects, both of them are calligraphers with considerable artistic status and achievements in recognized calligraphy circles. This paper will focus on Inoue Yu-ichi and Wang Dongling's unique personal lives as the starting point, beginning with each calligrapher ' s experience of the special,non-reproducible background of the times and subsequent growth of calligraphic art;then tease out their similarities and differences followed by careful analysis and exploration of their innovations in calligraphy creation and it's significance. There is a certain exploratory significance to the research of innovative contemporary calligraphy styles, and this will bring new enlightenment and insight for later generations when they study calligraphy.
