Reading is a complex cognitive process to obtain meaning from linguistic signs, and it is also an important part of English learning process. At present, many English learners still have such problems as lack of English reading knowledge and poor reading comprehension ability. This is especially true for lots of English learners of adult education, partly because of their problems with the language itself, but the impact of non-linguistic factors cannot be ignored.Non-linguistic factors include intellectual factors and non-intellectual ones. The former includes personal abilities of observation, attention, memory, imagination, and thinking, while the latter involves such factors as motivation, interest, willpower and emotion. How to effectively improve English reading ability of college students of adult education is an urgent question to be answered. This dissertation discusses the influence of linguistic and non-linguistic factors and the controlled reading processing strategy on English reading ability of adult college students through qualitative and quantitative research methods, such as questionnaires, tests, and experiments.Based on the review of the investigation and findings of the relevant previous studies, the experimental operation procedures of reading processing strategies are designed and its application validity in the cultivation of English reading ability of adult college students is verified so as to help adult education learners find new ways to develop their English reading ability. The questionnaires include two parts: the question survey and the scale survey. The former investigates the reading difficulties of adult education English learners, the influence of linguistic and non-linguistic factors on reading ability, while the latter probes into the issues of the degree of agreement of adult education students on reading abilities and strategies, reading difficulties, the relationship between linguistic and non-linguistic factors and reading ability, and the effect of the controlled processing strategy on the students' English reading ability. In the present study,Likert 5 scale is used to investigate the agreement degree of related statements, and Z-test was carried out on the survey values to identify whether there is significant difference in Z-value of the difference between the pairings of the total proportion of each quantity value. In this study, the software Excel 2010 and SPSS25.0 are used to conduct such descriptive statistics as mean and standard deviation and such inferential statistics as T-test and correlation analysis on the experimental data,in order to explore the application validity of the controlled reading processing strategy.Through the questionnaires, this dissertation finds that: 1)The factors affecting English reading ability are embodied in the students' lexical, grammatical and discourse knowledge of the language;2)Non-linguistic factors such as reading motivation, cultural background knowledge and reading strategies affect the cultivation of English reading ability;3)The intelligence factors and non-intelligence factors have important impacts on English reading ability of adult education;4)The controlled reading processing strategy based on the regulation of linguistic and non-verbal factors can significantly promote the English reading ability of adult education learners. This study also finds that, when college students of adult education have similar English reading proficiency, the application effect of the controlled reading processing strategy is significantly better than that of the traditional reading processing strategy. Therefore,it can be inferred that the application of the controlled reading processing strategy can significantly improve English reading ability of adult education learners. This dissertation investigates the linguistic and non-linguistic factors that affect English reading ability of adult college students, explore the methods of regulating the learners' linguistic and non-linguistic factors actively and consciously through the controlled reading processing strategy,so as to effectively help learners acquire and process the information of reading texts, and examines effective methods of improving learners' English reading ability from the aspects of teaching and learning. Therefore, this study has important theoretical value and practical significance.
