In the 1980 s,German scholar Jan Assmann and his wife Aleida Assmann proposed the concept of “cultural memory”,which expanded the research of memory from biological, psychological and sociological dimensions to the field of culture and established the inner relationship between memory, culture and identity. In this dissertation, the research of Jan Assmann's theory of cultural memory is mainly combed, explained and analyzed from the theoretical sources, contents, attributes and practical target. In a sense, cultural memory is the basis of constructing national consciousness of wholeness and particularity. The reason is that cultural memory plays a fundamental role in the construction of national cultural identity, and the historical accumulation of a nation has been solidified and continued through the external cultural symbols revealed at present. The understanding of the concept of cultural memory includes the dual dimensions. From the perspective of cultural theory, cultural memory can provide positioning and support for the self-identity of members of society, nation and country, and constantly strengthen and consolidate the cultural identity within the nation. From the perspective of memory theory, cultural memory establishes the relationship between the past and the present. Those significant past has been solidified and continued over time through cultural symbols. The basic attributes of cultural memory include three aspects: cultural memory transcends the limitations of time and space influenced by medium such as rituals and words, and is constantly drawn into the current social framework, making memory continuous. The dual memory modes of cultural memory are closely related to the current social environment, needs and interests, which make memory selective and reconstructive. The political strategies of memory in its alliance with rulers and non-rulers make memory foundational and resistant.Cultural memory can regulate and restrict the behavior of collective members according to the moral code, strengthen the moral responsibility of collective members, which makes memory moral.Cultural memory plays an important role in facilitating the construction of cultural identity.Compared with the previous studies from the macroscopic framework characterized by generalization and abstraction to the construction of cultural identity, cultural memory from the micro perspective to construct the cultural identity, restores the rich connotation of cultural identity and provides fresh cultural resources for the construction of cultural identity, which ensure the continuity and openness of cultural identity. The research of Jan Assmann's theory of cultural memory has important theoretical value and practical significance. In theory, the research of theory of cultural memory promotes the combination of macro-view and micro-view theoretical paradigm, and enriches and develops the macro-cultural historical interpretation model. In practice, the research of theory of cultural memory provides the accessible path and basis for constructing cultural identity and realizing cultural confidence. At the same time, through building a community with a shared cultural memory for mankind, the past, present and future can be organically connected,so that the main body of memory can form ideological, emotional and cultural identity in the long history of human cultural memory. It plays an important role in promoting the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
