The Great Depression happened in the United States from 1929 to 1933 is a symbol in the area of economic history and economic thoughts.As a piece of economic history, comparing to any depression happened before, the Great Depression is more alike to the modern financial crisis. On one hand, the fiasco of stock market incurred bank crisis and then money deflation and unemployment; on the other hand, all kinds of policies from the government were used to conquer the crisis before the conclusion of academic debates came out.As a part of economic thoughts, the classic school of economics was doubted and Keynesian economics became main stream in macroeconomics after the Great Depression, with Austrian economics competing with it. The New Keynesian Economics absorb the advantages of these two schools.In this thesis, we summarize the history of the Great Depression firstly and then research the debate of different schools of economics on it. As a attempt of documentation study, then, some main stream and non-main stream ideas was included after.
