As the primary means to understand and perceive the built environment, the sequential vision plays an important role in enhancing the spatial experience. In the perspective view with a fixed viewpoint and a limited view field, design presentation in architectural practice generally ignores the continuous spatial experience of human immersion in the environment. Most of the existing research attempts to analyze the phenomenon of sequential spatial experience by qualitative descriptions. The relationship between the spatial composition of the sequential vision and the cognitive experience is unclear. It is necessary and important to clarify the influential mechanisms of sequential space experience and quantify the representation information of sequential vision experience in the theoretical and practical aspects. The thesis takes the architectural sequential space as the research subject, the visual information analysis of the environment as the method, and the dynamic spatial relationship between the observer and spatial surfaces as the clue. This study is operated in the aspects of the influential mechanisms of spatial experience, quantitative measures of visual representation in motion, and information test-feedback for spatial design optimization.First, the theoretical relevance of perceptual phenomenology and ecological psychology is summarized through an interdisciplinary research approach. The mechanisms of the sequential visual experience phenomenology are explained in the perspective of visual ecology.Three kinesthetic perceptual cues representing the sequential visual experience are identified: ambient optical flow, kinesthetic parallax and visual updating.Secondly, the spatial components, which affect the psychological perception in the physical environment, are extracted and verified through classical cases/literature studies and virtual reality cognitive experiments.Spatial manipulation methods are generalized based on visual-perceptual representations of movement.Through the analysis of panoramic projection transformation on the kinesthetic perception principles,a quantitative measure method for representing the sequential visual experience is proposed based on the sequential panoramic image analysis. The dynamic rules of representational information during sequential visual experience with different spatial element combinations are summarized.Thirdly, the visualization analysis of ambient visual information are applied to support the four design processes of spatial node selection, spatial node sequencing, path design and spatial surface design.A design optimization method is constructed by examining the experience representation information which integrated represent the design performance of architectural sequential space. This study expands the scope of perceptual phenomenological research on the sequential visual experience and provides theoretical and methodological support for architectural sequential space design from the perspective of visual ecology. It improves the research framework of architectural sequential space design, quantifies the analysis method of dynamic visual information, and enhances the scientific and objective nature of architectural sequential space design research.A reciprocal feedback mechanism between the architectural sequential space manipulation and the experience representation test is established.Evidence-based design practice processes are supported through simultaneous feedback of dynamic ambient visual information features.
