The Academic History Of The Research Of Chinese Complex Sentences In The Initial Period Of Grammar

Complex sentences,as the carrier of expressing complex thoughts,have been concerned by scholars for more than a hundred years since Ma’s Grammar.The research achievements of Chinese complex sentences in academic circles are abundant,involving complex sentence theory,complex sentence system and classification,connective mark,structure and semantic relationship and so on.However,the research on the related problem of complex sentences in the initial period of grammar is relatively rare,only study also more focused on Ma’s Grammar(《马氏文通》)and The New Chinese Grammar(《新着国语文法》)two books of complex sentences,results of other related works less attention.Only by grasping the origin can we recognize the development trend.The initial period of grammar is the key period for the development of Chinese complex sentences.In view of the importance of this period,this dissertation systematically combs the relevant achievements of the study of Chinese complex sentences in this period on the basis of the previous scholars’ research,and reviews the related works of complex sentences in stages according to the order of the general history and the later special history,in order to show the whole picture of the study of Chinese complex sentences in the initial period of grammar.Through the history of special topics,this dissertation traces the origin of the related problems,carefully examines the process of the emergence and development of the related problems of Chinese complex sentences,such as the definition of complex sentences,the classification of complex sentences,the associated markers,and the levels of complex sentences,and finds the inheritance and connection before and after,so as to clarify the development context of the academic history of Chinese complex sentences in the period of the establishment of grammar.Finally,it summarizes the lessons from gains and losses,and probes into the inspiration for the current study of Chinese complex sentences.The main body is divided into six parts.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly includes the research status of Chinese complex sentences in the initial stage of grammar,the research content,objectives,ideas and methods,and the significance of this dissertation.Firstly,according to the definition of the initial period of grammar in various languages and grammars history,the scope of this dissertation is determined,that is,from the publication of Ma’s Grammar in 1898 to the beginning of the reform of grammar in 1938.By combing the relevant literature on the study of Chinese complex sentences in the initial period of grammar,the research content of this paper is determined.In order to further refine the research,on the basis of the characteristics of the development of Chinese complex sentences,we divide the research into three stages:budding stage,developing stage and trough stage.The second chapter introduces the first two decades(1898-1918),which is the embryonic period of the study of Chinese complex sentences,from the publication of Ma’s Grammar to the national mandarin movement.In this period,the related works of Chinese complex sentences were mostly written in classical Chinese,and the concept of complex sentences was not clearly put forward,but the rudiment of Chinese complex sentences existed.This chapter first reviews the related contents of complex sentences in Ma’s Grammar(《马氏文通》)and English Grammar Annotated in Chinese(《英文汉诂》),then summarizes other works related to complex sentences,and finally summarizes the characteristics of the stage.The third chapter introduces the twenties of the 20th century(1919-1929),the development of the study of Chinese complex sentences in the period of the initial grammar,from the full development of the Mandarin movement to the low ebb of grammar research.The related works on Chinese complex sentences in this period include both classical Chinese,classical Chinese and vernacular,and mainly in vernacular.The definition and classification of complex sentence were put forward clearly,the relationship between complex sentences and connective markers were discussed enthusiastically,and the level and condensation of complex sentences were involved partly in some works.Many works have a far-reaching impact on later generations.This chapter first reviews the relevant contents of complex sentences in General Theory of Chinese Grammar(《中国文法通论》),Chinese Language Canon(《国语文典》),Practical Grammar of Chinese Spoken Language(《实用国语文法》),The New Chinese Grammar(《新着国语文法》),and the Four Chapters of Modern Chinese Grammar(《国语文法四讲》),then introduces briefly other complex sentences related works,and finally summarizes the characteristics of the stage.The fourth chapter introduces the thirties of the 20th century(1930-1938),the trough period for the study of Chinese complex sentences,from the late period of Mandarin Movement to the eve of grammar reform.In the works of this period,there were both vernacular and classical Chinese,and there was also a comparison between the two.The complex sentence system was mostly the imitation or simplification of the New Chinese Grammar,while the Theory of Chinese Grammar(《中国文法论》)summarized the previous study of complex sentences.This chapter first reviews the related content of complex sentences in Concise Mandarin Grammar(《简明国语文法》),New Edition of Chinese Grammar(《新编国语文法》),the Theory of Chinese Grammar(《中国文法论》),then discusses other works related to complex sentences,and finally summarizes the characteristics of the stage.The fifth chapter is the monographic study of Chinese complex sentences in the initial period of grammar.On the basis of the previous chapters,this chapter comprehensively combs the research achievements of Chinese complex sentences in the initial period of grammar from the definition,the classification,connective markers,the levels,the deformation and condensation of complex sentences,and makes a vertical and horizontal comparison to outline the development of the study about Chinese complex sentences in the initial period of grammar history.From the embryonic stage to the development stage and then to the trough stage,the sages’ understanding of Chinese complex sentences has been deepening,from obvious imitation to conscious attention to the characteristics of Chinese.The Sixth chapter is the general conclusion.Firstly,the characteristics of the study of Chinese complex sentences in the initial period of grammar were summed up systematically,through the chronological and monographic research.Secondly,we have discussed the academic impact of the study of Chinese complex on the following research.Last but not least,it educe the inspiration of the contemporary study on complex sentences and indicate the innovation points and faultiness of this dissertation.
