Focusing on the two art forms of novel and film,this paper studies the film adaptation of Chinese new century novels,thus combining China’s literary pattern with multiculturalism.Through a review of influential film adaptations of novels since the 21 st century,it selects the most classic ones to analyze the appeal of Chinese new century novels to film audiences and the defects of their film adaptations.Taking the 21 st century as a node,it conducts a comparative analysis of novels before and after it to identify the major elements of new century novels that appeal to audiences.Based on the theory of intertextuality in postmodern thinking,it illustrates the transcendence and innovation in film adaptations with the example of new century novel texts and film texts adapted from them,and demonstrates the unique features of two different art forms in intertextuality transformation.To better achieve the research purpose,this paper also performs comparative analysis to discuss the evolution of film adaptations of new century novels,review their twenty-year development,probe into their strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities and challenges.In addition,it attempts to sum up the experiences and lessons learned in the adaptation of new century novels to provide beneficial references,with a view to expanding the research dimension of new century novels.This paper consists of five parts:In Part Ⅰ,it discusses the new features and landscapes of film adaptations of new century novels.From the three stages of the film adaptation of new century novels,it elaborates on the artistry,marketability,diversity and industrialization of the film adaptation of new century novels.Since the 21 st century,there has been an increasingly distinctive interaction between novels and films.On the one hand,the new features of new century novels exert influence on film art and promote its innovation;On the other hand,the film adaptation of novels promotes the cinematic writing of literary creations.As a result,there is the filmization of novels,the typification of films,and the extensive film adaptations of novels.Being market-oriented,the film adaptations of new century novels cater to the aesthetic interests of audiences.According to the different channels and audiences of film distribution,they constantly adjust their adaptation strategies.This is especially true when it comes to developing overseas markets.Regarding the national and international character of the film adaptation of ability exploration novels,efforts are made to preserve their national character while promoting them to go global and become an integral part of world films.In Part Ⅱ,it analyzes the textual reworking involved in film adaptations of new century novels,and reflects on the artistic differences between film adaptations of novels from the perspectives of theme,characterization,plot,and narrative.First,in terms of theme,the film adaptations are presented in two different ways,i.e.,"faithfully" reproducing the novel’s themes and "appropriately" reconstructing the novel’s themes.In the latter case,the film adaptation of new century novels repositions the themes.Second,in terms of characterization,the film adaptations of new century novels have mainly three approaches,i.e.,characterization from literary uncertainty to cinematic concreteness,reinvention of the character,and "simplification" and "enrichment" of characters.Third,in terms of plot,the film adaptation of new century novels mainly adopts two means,i.e.,the reconstruction of narrative events and the change of story endings.Last,it implies the art of "re-narrative" in the screenwriter’s film adaptation of new century novels from two aspects,i.e.,the cinematic transformation of narrative discourse,and the cinematic transformation of narrative space and narrative language.In Part Ⅲ,it explores the media and artistic characteristics of film adaptations of novels in the new media era.Digital technology and new online media have a significant impact on the film adaptation of new century novels,bringing about changes in the production and dissemination mechanisms of art and affecting the image transformation of the language of film and television.Besides,new digital media brings different aesthetic experiences to the subject and object of film art.With improvements in the aesthetic taste and demand of the subject,the aesthetic object has been put forward new requirements.This pushes for the artistic transformation of the aesthetic object to narrow the aesthetic gap between the subject and the object.Moreover,the introduction of new digital media technology has changed the aesthetic elements of film adaptations of new century novels,resulting in fundamental changes in artistic modeling,image-oriented approach and story-oriented imagination.In Part Ⅳ,it expounds on the film adaptations of new century novels in the context of marketization,and considers the interaction between the film market and film adaptations.In general,the impact of the film market on film adaptations of new century novels is manifested by the box office and market share.They lead to the typification characteristics of film adaptations and form three types,namely film adaptations of traditional novels,film adaptations of online novels,and films with large themes and small budgets.On the box office side,films adapted from traditional novels are more attractive to audiences,and films adapted from online novels are more likely to create box office success.On the market share side,films adapted from online novels have notable pros and cons.Film adaptations of traditional novels are still the mainstream in China.In part Ⅴ,it looks to the future development of film adaptations of new century novels.In the context of the new century,writers,screenwriters and directors have assumed different identities.Rather than clear-cut boundaries,there are increasingly blurred limits to specialization,with extensive identity "sharing" and cross-border integration.To improve the quality of film production,the film adaptations of famous authors’ masterpieces should undoubtedly receive extra attention to ensure quality from the source.Through the study of film adaptations of new century novels,this paper proposes the construction of an interactive production model between new century novels and films to build a professional platform,establish a sound mechanism,and construct a harmonious consumer culture context,thereby bringing an overall boost to the film adaptations of new century novels.
