| In the 20 th century, the formation and development of fiber art had been significantly influenced by the Bauhaus,of which Anni Albers was a key character. As an important representative of the Bauhaus textile workshop,Albers was not only a textile designer and educator, but also an extraordinary fiber artist. She brought the ideas and spirit of the Bauhaus from Germany to the United States and to spread it to the younger generations of artists through her teaching practice at Black Mountain College in the United States.Albers emphasized the exploration of materials, tactility, and the idea of "starting from zero" in her art and education, and later on,she proposed the possibility of "artisticizing" weaving, which provided an important theoretical foundation for the formation of the Fiber Art Movement. Therefore, this dissertation attempts to analyze Anni Albers’ weaving practice and her weaving theory, and to sort out her core ideas in order to deduce the important role she played in the early formation of fiber art.The introduction provides a historical overview of the relationship between Anni Albers and fiber art,as well as the current state of research on Albers domestic and overseas.Chapter one provides an overview of Albers from the Bauhaus to Black Mountain College, describing how she spread her artistic ideas from Europe to the United States.Chapter two focuses on Albers’ practical and theoretical achievements during her studies and teaching at the Bauhaus, and their relevance to the Bauhaus.Chapter three analyzes Albers’ s deep understanding from tactile perception to weaving materials and structures, and discusses the development of Albers’ various weaving technique concepts.Chapter four discusses Albers’ attempts to develop the idea of "starting from zero" at the Black Mountain College, the relationship between art and experience that Albers emphasizes, and how Albers establishes the fiber art from initial weaving of patterns to the model of weaving and writing.Chapter five discusses Albers’ influence on the Fiber Art Movement in the United States, which in turn made fiber art a new category of art which independent of craft or technique. The conclusion attempts to summarize the main lines of Albers’ thought and her contribution to fiber art,as well as thinking about some of the scholarly questions that can not resolved in this dissertation, including the possibilities for future advancement. |
