| The research on the English translation of Lao She’s novels has been the focus of the Sinology circles as well as the Chinese literature research community for many years in the historical process of Chinese literature going global,however,cross-cultural interpretation theoretical research is relatively lacking.Facing the cross-context and cross-cultural situation on the novels of Lao She,this research adopts the research route of "problem" instead of individual piece of novels. To avoid the decentralization and lack of systematization of the research content brought about by the research based on individual novels as the outline, the thesis is focused on the two levels of problem, which are "interior literary problem" and "exterior literary problem".In terms of the arrangement of the research content,it first studies the problems in the field of literature, and then transitions to the interdisciplinary field of literature and culture. In order to conduct cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural exploratory research from the text interpretation of the works, the analysis of the translation, and the analysis of acceptance, the theory being used is based on literary acceptance and interculturality interpretation. To begin with, through the summary of the main textual features of English-translated novels of Lao She and the investigation of literature reviews, this paper finds that the English-speaking world often analyzes Lao She’s works with Western symbolic narrative logic while ignoring the narrative logic of his English-translated works is also heavily influenced by the Chinese narrative. The expansion and extension of Lao She’s abstract creative elements imagined by the Western narrative logic as well as its Chinese narrative logic give the plot complete, systematic, and scarce support in his English translations, helping the translator to construct novel works. In addition, the thesis discusses how Lao She’s acceptance orientation in the English-speaking world is affected by different value identifications, ideological elaboration systems, and differences in the depth of audience understanding. It also reveals that Lao She’s proficient use of national languages in his literary practice is an important help for both Chinese and English languages during the procedure of the subject’s conscious awareness of cultural communication, humanistic character, and cultural and aesthetic creative elements provided by the system expression and the transformation of heterogeneous elements. The thesis points out that in the process of constructing and accepting the national literary image of a literary work across nationalities and cultures, not only the internal narrative of the work, but the external birth environment of the work and the literary field of the translated country matters. The cultural consciousness Lao She contained in the works has an important influence on the understanding and acceptance of cultural awareness. In the meanwhile, several works of Chinese literary history written by overseas Chinese sinologists also have a crucial significance in spreading the image of national literature, and their positioning of literary history could be an effective supplement.Lastly, this paper analyzes and demonstrates the differences in the appeals of literary subjects and objects in cross-cultural acceptance, the adaptation and assimilation of aesthetic psychological structures, readers’ expectations and dialogues, literary translation and dissemination, and etc.The internal mechanism of Lao She’s novels in the English world is an attempt to make up for the gap in this part of the study of literary theory.Enlightenment is drawn from the process of Lao She’s novels going to the world, and it is proposed that there is a potential relationship between the expansion of Chinese literature in the English-speaking world and the world literature space formed by the intersection of Eastern and Western cultures contained in Lao She’s works.A new style of art unique to Lao She’s novels in the English world is formed and developed. This study consists of an introduction, six chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction part plays the role of introduction and literature review, which is an important part of the full text.Firstly, the research purpose and theoretical and practical value of the selected topic are expounded, and the necessity of the research question is clarified. Then, through "problem-oriented" data collection and sorting,it is determined that the research object is "Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world",and the research content is "text interpretation, literary transformation, and cultural acceptance".The development of full-text research has laid a solid foundation. The first chapter is an overview of Lao She and his English-translated novels.First of all, this study discusses Lao She’s cultural identity and creative consciousness, which is the basis for Lao She’s works.Lao She’s works have been spread overseas for seventy or eighty years and are still in the ascendant and support his literary creation. In view of the uneven dissemination of Lao She’s novels, the literary acceptance of Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world is divided into "the introduction period","the literary diplomacy period","the silent period",and "the new period" from the perspective of politics and ideology. All four periods are outlined. The reception of works in each period and the reasons for their formation are described, providing a factual basis for the research on the cross-cultural acceptance of works. The second chapter is the interpretation of the elements of Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world, focusing on the writer’s creative consciousness, typical character structure and plot narration, and other core elements of the novel’s creation to investigate Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world.Interpretation, summarizing the concept of creative elements that are generalized and imagined by the "other".Through the expansion and extension of these three core elements, this thesis discusses the support and service of the integrity, systematicness, and scarcity of the storyline in the novel and constructs a complete framework system of novel work.It explores the class relationship between literature and art constructed by the imaginary cultural community that implements and maintains the "edge of other countries-center of one’s own country" in the West and explores the narrative logic of Lao She’s novels and the laws of Western literature. The third chapter is a study of the literary transformation of Lao She’s novels to the English-speaking world. From the main literary transformation characteristics of the creative subject, creative language, and creative thought in the whole process of translation activities, the translator’s subjectivity, which "has the translator’s conscious cultural awareness, humanistic character, and cultural and aesthetic creativity",reflects the subjective initiative. The transformation of the novel language of the difference in expression and heterogeneous elements between the two language systems and the Chinese ethical thought that emphasizes "completeness",advocates "morality" and attaches great importance to "emotion",and the West advocates "individual" and advocates "utility" Focus on the "rationality" of the cultural differences between Western ethics to observe. It is found that the connotation that the English translation can express to Lao She’s novels is not directly transplanted but adapted, transformed, and created according to its needs. The fourth chapter studies the cross-cultural acceptance of Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world.First of all,in the definition of literary acceptance, the subject of acceptance is not only the chivalrous category of readers but a broad category including readers, translators, publishing institutions, literary media, and even literary criticism.Furthermore,in aesthetics, every link of literary communication is based on being a reader. Therefore, this chapter discusses the accepted facts of Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world and the literary history of the cross-cultural acceptance of Lao She’s novels from the aspects of readers, translators, and media. The fifth chapter studies the cultural discipline and inheritance of Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world. The literary aesthetics of Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world is not only reflected in its literary storytelling, linguistic charm, legendary characters, unique sense of humor, and other factors but also in the spiritual resonance and cultural identity brought by the cultural awareness contained in his literary works. In the difference between Chinese and Western literary acceptance theories,we find the cultural factors of the acceptance of Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world.Due to the power struggle for Western cultural hegemony and the sharp increase in doubts about self-cultural psychology, the prominence and clear recognition of the values of the English-speaking world have formed an inductive relationship between readers and works.Cultural discipline and inheritance naturally occur for the cross-cultural acceptance of literary works. The study also found that Lao She’s English novels integrate Chinese and Western cultural concepts, and the active deepening and re-creation of the connotation of the works by readers in the English-speaking world blurs the theoretically existing barriers to acceptance of cross-cultural works. The sixth chapter discusses Lao She’s novels going to the world. The reason why Lao She’s novels are accepted by the English-speaking world and have a lasting influence is not only the cultural charm contained in Lao She’s works, the social universality embodied in the works, the in-depth ideological character of the characters, the literary and artistic nature of the text creation, etc.Since China’s May 4th New Culture Movement, the national power represented by politics, economy, and culture has gradually strengthened. The key to Lao She’s novels going to the world and becoming an important part of world literature lies in the works’ grasp of the contemporary specific spiritual world, the wide acceptance worldwide, and the comments of multilingual literary theorists. This chapter discusses how Lao She’s novels go to the world, translation strategies, and the formation of a new artistic style that integrates Chinese and Western cultures, and further improves and puts forward thoughts on how Chinese modern and contemporary literature goes to the world. In the last concluding part, the entire studies are summarized, and it is believed that Lao She’s novels go to the English-speaking world because of the literary nature of his works and the intercultural nature of his works. The innovation of this thesis is mainly reflected in the first, from the perspective of the research, the text interpretation and literary transformation of Lao She’s novel literature in the English-speaking world are faced directly, and the cultural acceptance outside the literature is systematically studied. This study differs from the previous research on Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world, where most of the literature was demonstrated from translation strategies, comparative literature, and literary communication perspectives. It is also different from the context in which most of the previous works of literature were based on the original works of Lao She’s novels.Second,in terms of research ideas,we take Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world as a whole, extract literary problems from them, and take problem research as the key link. The research content transitions from text interpretation to literary transformation and then to cultural acceptance. It breaks through the limitations of the research level and depth of the previous literature based on the research of a single work.Thirdly,in the analysis of literary theory, aiming at Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world, based on the theory of literary acceptance,it tentatively explores the cross-cultural acceptance of the interaction between the nationality and the world of the reader’s aesthetic, psychological structure.Based on the theory of interculturality, this thesis examines readers’ psychological resonance and value identification,multi-view fusion, and interculturality brought by the output of literary works. It also discusses the literary value and cultural value brought by Lao She’s interculturality. Finally, this thesis contains several aspects of study, including literary ontology research, literary and cultural research, the translation and dissemination of works, the studies from society, religion, history, and other perspectives involved in Lao She’s novels in the English-speaking world, and Interdisciplinary,cross-cultural exploratory research. |
