Grammar variation is an ordinary phenomenon,which has been studied for quite a long history.However,most researchers focused on the description the types of variation,ignoring exploring the motivation and mechanism behind it.Benefiting from the previous research,this dissertation discusses the Chinese grammar variation from the Construction coercion approach which based on prosodic coercion,lexical coercion,semantic coercion and pragmatic coercion,and the mechanism based on conflict-interaction-dominance-fusion.It starts with the following four aspects:(1)the prosodic coercion of Adjective AA Construction;(2)the lexical coercion of“yi+classifier+de+noun” Construction;(3)the semantic coercion of “N+zhe”Construction;(4)the pragmatic coercion of “noun+yi+classifier” Construction.Prosody coercion means that in poetic verbal communication,prosody plays a leading role,forcing other language elements to make corresponding adjustments to adapt to the form,function and meaning of the prosody structure of poetry.Lexical coercion is actually the dominant role of vocabulary in the interaction between components and the interaction between components and constructions,and a certain word determines the function and meaning of other components and constructions.Semantic coercion concerns with dominant role of semantic in the interaction between components and the interaction between components and constructions,and a certain word determines the function and meaning of other components and constructions.Pragmatic coercion refers to the modification of the form,meaning and function of the terms entered into the construction under the rule of the principle of intention in order to achieve a certain rhetorical effect.Therefore,construction coercion is dominant role of language element in the interaction between components and the interaction between components and constructions,and a certain word determines the function and meaning of other components and constructions,to accomplish the harmony of the language system.The mechanism of prosody coercion is a whole process,which mainly includes conflict,interaction,dominance and fusion.The study of principle of language are inseparable from unconventional,marginal phenomena.Language is an ever-changing system,which caused by the result of the interfacial interaction of prosody,vocabulary,syntax,semantics,and pragmatics.Grammar variation in Chinese modern poetry involves syntactic form and meaning variation.The former is made up of sentence arrangement,repetition,addition,deletion of syntactic component.The latter includes the variation in the function of words and unconventional collocations.It finds out the dedication and problems in the formal research,and put forward the necessary of the grammar variation from the Construction Coercion.Variations in poetic style are mostly changes in form or meaning due to changes in register,and these changes are still in the process of language evolution.Although the study of poetic style variation focuses on synchronic aspects,it also contains traces of diachronic evolution.As a grammatical variation phenomenon at the interface between grammar and rhetoric,the variation phenomenon caused by construction suppression has a continuum between grammar and rhetoric.According to the frequency statistics,the AA-type reduplicated adjectives construction and the “N + zhe” construction are located at both ends of the continuum.The“noun+yi+classifier”construction and the“ yi+classifier+de+noun” construction are in the middle of the section,which can be expressed as:the AA-type reduplicated adjectives construction >“noun+yi+classifier” >“yi+classifier+de+noun”construction > “N + zhe”construction.In the style of poetry,the AA-type reduplicated adjectives construction is located at the grammatical end.On the one hand,it is related to the emphasis on music in poetry.On the other hand,the variation of prosodic construction is mostly the variation of form.“N + zhe” is at the rhetorical end because it involves variation in semantic content.The AA-type reduplicated adjectives force the grammatical elements to change in two ways: one is the change of formal features,which means that under the influence of prosody,the AA-type reduplicated adjectives repeat or move to an unconventional position,which echoing harmonious rhythm.The second is semantic type shift,which refers to the shift phenomenon that occurs in order to resolve the semantic conflict of constructions.The meaning of prosody in modern Chinese poetry is presupposed.AA-type reduplicated adjectives structures are both triggers and fusers of conflict.When the AA-type reduplicated adjectives interact with other language elements,the structure itself has strong productivity.Once it enters the AA-type reduplicated adjectives slot,if the meaning of the term conflicts with the meaning of the AA-type reduplicated adjectives,its grammatical function or meaning will change to adapt to the meaning of the AA-type reduplicated adjectives.The construction is made into the foreground by means of inversion and repetition,and other language elements become the background.The motivations of prosody coercion are as follows: the priority of rhythm,the poetic function dominates in the poetic language.There are two types of lexical coercion in the construction of“yi+classifier+de+noun”: the dislocation-type construction and the diversion-type construction.The operation of construction mainly includes the lexical coercion of quantifiers and the lexical coercion of “de”.The generative mechanism of the construction is a metonymy mechanism based on the experience and proximity of cognitive concepts.In complex constructions,the interaction between items and construction is hierarchical,different item plays a leading role in different levels of interaction.The generation of constructions may be the result of the interaction between lexical coercion and construction coercion.“N + zhe”construction are divided into two categories: tool category and process category.Distinguishes the main hierarchical relationships of the construction of “N +zhe”,namely the relationship between “N + zhe” and “V+ zhe”,the relationship between N and “N + zhe”,and the relationship between N and “zhe”.Semantic mechanism of “N + zhe”is a two-way shift: the constructional meaning suppresses the noun from top to bottom,and the noun is grammatically,functionally and semantically connected to the constructional self through functional shift,which is a bottom-up fusion.The motivation of “N + zhe” includes: the creativity of language,the equivalence of meaning,and the figurativeness of description.The types of “noun+yi+classifier” constructions mainly include descriptive constructions and evaluative constructions.The generation process of“noun+yi+classifier” construction is roughly divided into three stages: the first stage is the conceptual framework stage of “noun+yi+classifier”.The human brain converts information such as intentions into concepts.The second stage is the formation stage of the semantic frame of the “noun+yi+classifier” construction,that is,the concept of intention is transformed into the semantic frame of the “noun+yi+classifier”construction.The last stage is the grammatical frame formation stage of the construction of “noun+yi+classifier”,including the selection and combination of specific words,and then fill in specific words into the construction to form specific sentences of the construction of “noun+yi+classifier”.Based on construction coercion theory,this paper explains the motivation and mechanism of grammatical variation in modern Chinese poetry,and attempts to propose the modes of prosodic coercion,lexical coercion,semantic coercion and pragmatic coercion,as well as mechanism of construction of "conflict,interaction,dominance,and integration",which provides a new perspective for modern Chinese grammatical variation.The present research further enriches the connotation of the research on construction coercion theory,expands the extension of construction coercion,and points out that the research on the theory of construction coercion should realize a multi-level research model.Applying the corpus method to study the grammatical variation of modern Chinese poetry has expanded the application of the corpus method in literature,and improved the credibility and persuasiveness of the research.
