A Study Of Indonesian Modern Ecological Literature (1920-2020)

Indonesia is located in the tropical region of Southeast Asia and is an archipelagic country surrounded by the ocean.It is one of the countries with the richest biodiversity in the world,with countless types of terrestrial and marine ecosystems,which is of crucial importance for global ecological security.However,at the same time,Indonesia is located in the Pacific Rim seismic zone,with frequent natural disasters such as volcanoes,earthquakes,and tsunamis;Moreover,the centuries of Western colonial rule and the wave of industrialization after independence have long plagued Indonesia with ecological crises.For example,ecological problems such as deforestation,river pollution,marine pollution,air pollution,garbage overflow,endangered rare animals,and decline in species diversity have emerged in Indonesia in the past 100 years.For over a hundred years,modern Indonesian literature has always maintained close attention to the ecological issues in Indonesia.Writers have attempted to awaken the ecological consciousness of Indonesians in the form of literature,calling on them to reflect on the ecological crisis and restore harmonious relations with nature.As an Indonesian international student studying comparative literature and world literature,I developed a strong interest in ecological literature during my doctoral studies.I have decided to systematically sort out and interpret the ecological consciousness of modern Indonesian literature from 1920 to 2020,in response to the requirements of the era of ecological civilization.The research purpose of this paper is to systematically review the development of ecological consciousness in modern Indonesian literature from 1920 to 2020,with a focus on elucidating relevant works with ecological consciousness and distinctive ecological literature styles,in order to promote ecological criticism in modern Indonesian literature,and also to awaken more modern people’s ecological consciousness and encourage them to participate in the great cause of ecological protection.This paper is divided into three parts: introduction,five chapters of the main text,and conclusion.The introduction section mainly discusses the origin,current research status,research methods,and ideas of the research.The first chapter mainly outlines the ecological crisis in Indonesia and discusses the development of ecological consciousness in modern Indonesian literature from a macro perspective,laying the necessary foundation for the entire text.Chapters 2 to 5divide modern Indonesian literature into four stages,and then focus on sorting and analyzing the ecological consciousness of each stage of literature.Chapter 2 discusses the ecological consciousness of the literary development stage in Indonesia from 1900 to 1945.This chapter is divided into three stages: the Indonesian Book Compilation Bureau stage,the New Writers’ School stage,and the Japanese stage.The third chapter discusses the ecological consciousness during the turbulent period of literature in Indonesia from 1945 to 1965.Chapter 4 discusses the ecological consciousness of the stable stage of literature in Indonesia from 1965 to 1998.Chapter 5 discusses the ecological consciousness of Indonesia’s literary liberation stage after the 2000 s.The conclusion analyzes and summarizes the uniqueness,significance,and limitations of ecological consciousness in modern Indonesian literature.The development advantages of ecological literature in Indonesia over the past century are mainly reflected in its rich natural ecosystem and the integration of over three centuries of complex colonial influences.The characteristics of Indonesia’s ecological literature over the past century not only greatly promote Indonesia’s natural beauty,Indonesians’ intimacy with nature,and respect for nature,but also emphasize the ecological theological relationship between God,man,and nature.The emergence of Indonesian literary works with an ecological perspective not only promoted the progress of Indonesian literature,but also helped awaken the ecological consciousness of Indonesian people,prompting them to devote themselves to repairing the tense relationship between humans and nature,building a beautiful pattern of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature,and ultimately making the contribution that Indonesian people should make to the development of ecological civilization.
