The soil database provides an important tool for using soil resources effectively, of which the standardizing and norming procedure is promoted by the widespread application of SOTER. Taking Honghuatao Town in Yidu City of Hubei Province as an experimental sample region, the standard of SOTER unit in large-scale was established by means of the technology of GIS,according to the index system of SOTER unit in small-scale.1.Based on the digital elevation model, analysis charts of elevation, slope, relief intensity and surface incision, combining with the cluster analysis and the actual cartographic region, were generated to create the classification system of topographic indices including 3 classes for the elevation,4 classes for the slop,4 classes for the relief intensity and 4 classes for the earth's surface incision, respectively. Finally, intersecting the terrain and the soil charts, SOTER unit was set up by Arcmap.2.To test the classification system, the correlations between topographic indicators and soil properties were estimated. The result demonstrated the variation of soil properties in different classes was consistent with the correlations, and there were significant differences among the classes indicating that the classification system was reasonable and applicable.Currently, the division of SOTER unit in large-scale is still in the exploration stage. With the demand for the application of large-scale SOTER increasing, this work will be gradually carried out in depth, providing a clue for scholars engaged in this region.
